Employee Benefit Plan Audit
The US Department of Labor (DOL) requires annual audits of all employee benefit plans with 100 or more eligible participants. That doesn’t mean it has to be a costly, drawn out process. At Briggs & Veselka, we understand that as a plan sponsor you are faced with the challenges of adhering to the ever-changing rules and regulations governing employee benefit plan compliance. Our employee benefit plan audit services include defined benefit plans (pension), health and welfare, and defined contributions plans (ESOP and 401(k) profit sharing plans) subject to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) under the regulatory authority of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), as well as SEC 11-K filings and IRS Forms 5500 and 990 filings.
We believe that understanding our clients’ objectives and expectations are the first critical steps in a successful engagement. Therefore, you can rest assured that your annual employee benefit plan audit is comprehensive, thorough and in compliance with the required reporting and disclosure requirements.
Employee Benefit Plan Experience
There are 82,579 employee benefit plan audits in the U.S., which are performed by 7,358 CPA firms and these have assets of $6.3 trillion. Of these plan audits, only 1% or 73 firms audit more than 100 plans, and we are proud that Briggs & Veselka is a part of that 1%. We plan and execute our audits in a way that maximizes audit efficiency and quality, and we offer your plan administrator and human resources personnel confidence in their plan reporting and management.
Our employee benefit plan group consists of an experienced team of fifteen professionals who, from April through October, are dedicated solely to employee benefit plan clients. Our employee benefit plan auditors keep their skills current in this highly technical practice area by attending continuing education programs, including the annual AICPA National Conference on Employee Benefit Plans and other relevant seminars. We believe you will find our staff to be some of the most highly trained in their field when compared to staff at firms of similar size.
We also understand how important a smooth transition really is when you change accounting service providers. We work with a number of trustees, custodians and third party administrators and we have a thorough understanding of their processes and statements.
Our Commitment to Quality
At Briggs & Veselka, we have developed relationships with a number of important associations and organizations to help in the development and delivery of our employee benefit plan audit service. Our alliances include BKR International Employee Benefit Plan Auditing Committee, Lone Star Council of the American Society of Pension Actuaries, ERISA attorneys and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Employee Benefit Plan Audit Quality Center.
The AICPA’s Employee Benefit Plan Audit Quality Center is a national community of CPA firms that demonstrate a commitment to employee benefit plan audit quality and is designed to raise awareness about the importance of ERISA audits. Our membership in the AICPA Employee Benefit Plan Audit Quality Center enables us to gain access to a wealth of comprehensive resources to assist us in providing high quality employee benefit plan audits. In addition, we are committed to adhering to the highest quality standards by voluntarily agreeing to the Center membership requirements, which include designating a partner responsible for our employee benefit plan practice area, establishing quality control programs, performing annual internal inspection procedures, and making our peer review report findings publicly available.
Our designated partner responsible for the employee benefit plan practice area is Meresa Morgan. She has more than 20 years of experience in providing audit services to mid-size privately-held businesses and employee benefit plans.
